Differential Fa(s)cialities Spring 2011

DIFFERENTIAL FA(S)CIALITIES- Florencia Pita
DEPARTMENT OF THEORETICAL AND APPLIED AESTHETICS SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY (LTH)
Lund/Sweden
The charge of the workshop is to extend this notion of differential faciality by developing and deploying formal strategies that negotiate the desires and demands of the architectural envelope. This includes the internal demands of "insulation and immunization" (i.e., security, environmental control, privacy, etc.) , the external demands of legibility (i.e. symbolic, iconic, indexical), the internal desires of atmosphere, mood, & sensation, and the external desires of representation, posture, & publicity. Rather than formalizing these into a dichotomous arrangement each project will seek to produce envelopes that mediate a broad range of  things (or "attachments") into a complex assemblage. This raises an ongoing set of questions in architecture regarding problems of differentiation; what constitutes significant difference and how do we achieve it? The class will focus on a specific set of digital techniques in relation to surface, lines, volume, and mass that folds in information from a range of requirements such as program, site, context, structure, light & ventilation, circulation, etc.
